Best classes, Best trainers, best music!!!
Such an amazing and warm group of trainers! Been coming on and off for a couple of years–always leaves me sore and feeling like I have a little workout family.
The work out atmosphere of the gym and people are chill, hardworking and great. I don't feel judged at all, everyone is helpful and respectful
Super cool boxing and exercise class combo gym with hard but fun workouts and upbeat helpful instructor. Totally recommend it!
Classes are fun, challenging and sweaty and the coaches/instructors are friendly, informative and fun. Just what you want, especially when you are brand new to boxing. People are friendly and have different levels of experience so you learn a lot from watching as well as not feel so intimidated if you are new. Highly recommend
They're an awesome gym, so welcoming and friendly it's like I've known them my whole life. There is this one trainer I really recommend,His name is Otis Seymore. He motivates you to be nothing but your best and he got my body really toned. He's hands down the best!
Great atmosphere, the trainers treat you with respect and I love the positive vibes. The music is cool. And the workouts are good workouts!
Amazing trainers and atmosphere. Always leave feeling happy and healthy! The workout is hard but rewarding. Lots of bag time and one on one focus.
I've been to many gyms all around The Bay area and this for me has been one of the best experiences I've had. I've had the pleasure of working with all trainers including the owner Miguel, and I have to say that they are all extremely knowledgeable in their craft. some of the trainers have an extensive martial arts background not limited to boxing and the workouts they offer are amazing. If you're looking to work out and get back in shape while at the same time have a great time? The place for you. Mad love and respect to Dwayne, Omar, and Miguel.
If you want a great and fun workout that will have you dripping gallons of sweat head to Boxing for Health.
The workouts are tough, but I like the helpfulness and motivational sidebars from the trainers. I also like the grittiness feel of the gym, where you come as you are and give it your best shot for the day. They also have classes starting every hour from 5-7pm so it makes it convenient to find a class that works with the schedule. Parking is tough in the area so I recommend taking Lyft/Uber, public transportation, or walking to the gym.
The trainers at BFH are what make this gym great. They genuinely care, are funny, kind, and conscientious, teach well, push you hard, and are friendly and welcoming to everyone.
Love, love, LOVE this boxing gym! All the trainers - Miguel, Omar, Wayne, Henry - are awesome, and you are guaranteed to get an ass-kicking (and fun) workout in - come here ready to WORK. All levels from total newbies (like I once was) to regulars are welcomed, and encouraged. There's a great variety of classes, whether you're looking for boxing technique to cardio to strength training, and one-on-one personal training is also available (and fantastic - Omar is the greatest). Membership options include classes as well as use of the boxing gym, cardio room, and weight room. Come to BFH and feel like a champ!
Boxing for has been a great gym since I've first joined over a year ago. All the trainers (Miguel, Henry, Omar, Shane and Bilal) have been very pleasant to learn from. I typically come Inthe mornings for classes where it's less calm opposed to the evening classes that are packed to the rim. Gym isn't very large but has a lot of variety. Full ring with about a dozen heavy bags, weight room and cardio room. Also stairs are available if you wanna work the glutes. Last but not least the gym is very affordable with a monthly contract. Great place will continue to attend. Only downside is there isn't much parking because their gym is in a prime location by lake Merritt. Always, and I say always pay for parking because they will get you
This picture says a lot about this awesome gym. It not only delivers the intensity but also the warmth and encouragement to help ALL age groups achieve their goal AAAND have fun while you’re at it. The coaches push you! But you can sense the sincerity in their love for health. It’s not just a business for these guys. They clearly love what they do and that energy is transmitted into the workouts they give. I just love this place. I’ve moved further&been busy but I’ll definitely be commuting to this gym!
**BOXING BOOTCAMP**
Consists of 4 weeks of training.
There are different time slots available.
I attended Monday-Friday @ 6-7AM.
This class was everything I was looking for! I've looked at so many boxing classes/gym and they were either to expensive or not enough training. For example, offering boxing classes for 30min sessions only 3x a week. That's nothing! What am I gonna do with 30 minute workouts? Or I've attended classes that there was not enough one-on-one training, the trainer would show me a technique and send me off to practice on the bag.
Miguel was the perfect trainer! As soon as the class started we got right to it with motivational music playing in the background. I absolutely loved it! Each day he had something different. And he focused on all the areas that I personally want to focus on: CARDIO, STRENGTH, CORE, AND BUTT. In addition to boxing, of course. I definitely recommend taking this class and I will come back!
PS. 6AM class was perfect! This area gets really busy. At this time, no one is out and parking was always available right outside the gym.
Great workout every time with awesome trainers.
Instructor and workout were exactly what I need.
Great environment. All skill levels. No one is pressuring you. This place gives a family vibe and I think given it's a boxing gym, that's majorly important. Miguel along with the other trainers are all smiles and very welcoming. Good job!
Absolutely love Boxing for Health! The instructors are super welcoming, as well as everyone else who attends the classes. It's really motivating to see everyone working so hard. I also appreciate that the instructors really teach you the fundamentals for the Boxing Class and will spend time with you if you're brand new, while still giving you independence in the class. Definitely was a great workout and it's a great deal if you use Groupon as well.
Best workout of my life. Found this place through a friend, bought the Groupon and got seriously addicted. I love everyone who works here—Wayne, Omar, Shane and Miguel have changed my workout game and motivated me beyond literally anyone else ever has. The bootcamp style classes will push you beyond your limits, but if you stay strong and positive you can do it. Absolutely love this place!!!

He is one of the greatest trainers kind, patient but serious about helping you get results.
Staff is awesome! Miguel provides fantastic training in both the class & 1-on-1 setting. I'm finding myself getting amped up for the next class / session 1-2 days in advance. It's a workout like I haven't had in nearly 7 years & love every bit of it. The gym is a welcoming environment as staff help get you where you need to be & fellow 'boxers' have been friendly. Simply hooked!
Great instructors that push you hard but also encouraging! Great instruction and the best workout ever!
I got the groupon deal and I have to say that from the moment I stepped foot into this establishment, I absolutely loved the vibe. I'm highly considering becoming a member after my 20 groupon classes are up. Everyone is super friendly, both students and coaches combined. I love that it's mostly women who go to the classes, which makes things much less intimidating for a small Asian woman like myself. I have been going to the gym on/off for years, but never have I ever consistently pushed myself/been pushed by the coaches until I found Boxing for Health. The coaches are super attentive and are cognizant of everyone's differing fitness levels/boxing skills. I've never had such fun workouts that made an hour past by in a blink! I'm always dripping in sweat, but smiling by the end of it. I love the raise in morale when we're dead tired and the call/response of "HOW Y'ALL FEEL?!" "LIKE A CHAMP." SUPER FUN. In terms of parking, I usually go in the evenings after work and I've never really had trouble finding a space within walking distance. It's also free parking in the area, especially after 6pm. One thing I don't particular think is ideal is the lack of cleanliness/smell of certain areas (near the cubbies) on certain days; it definitely feels like it's major need of sanitizing/deoderizing (this might simply be at the fault of the people who attend the class though). In addition, I feel like the bathrooms could be cleaner. Otherwise, whether you're a beginner who's looking to build their strength and confidence, or a boxer looking to hone their skills, Boxing For Health will meet you where you are.
Omg, I went never boxed before and didn't know what to expect. The Best full body workout I've had, and the trainers are awesome! I'm hooked
There were no issues about feeling out of place or unwelcome at Boxing For Health for this 65-year old white girl. Wayne was my instructor. He pushes you so you get the best work-out while being patient and understanding.I'm trying to memorize how to wrap my hands; I bought a pair of gloves :-)
If you're an older woman or out of shape who is curious, try a class here! I always have some trepidation trying a new workout; that quickly dropped away at my first class here.
Miguel is an excellent coach. He motivates you to reach your maximum potential
Great workout. Helpful, encouraging and knowledgeable coaches. 100% Oakland. Open and friendly to everyone. I feel myself getting stronger everyday because of Boxing for Health.
Friendly and knowledgeable trainers, welcoming environment, and awesome workout. I recommend this place to anyone interested in learning the art of boxing, getting a killer workout, and being part of a community.
Such a fun place to get strong, healthy and have a blast. No frills in the best way. A real boxing gym, but not intimidating. The instructors are just great. They play the best 90s hip hop and seem to have so much fun hanging out and teaching boxing. Plus it is so fun to HIT SOMETHING!
Lately I've been feeling the need to get more active and work out more. If your anything like me the boring mundane routine workouts make me loose motivation so I thought why not try something new. I purchased a group. Deal for this place and thought boxing would be fun why not? I decided to tell my friend to come with and we showed up for the 11am class that was being taught by the owner. Side note they provide boxing gloves if you don't have any for five dollars and give you wraps for your hand so if you're looking to take classes multiple times the best thing to do is invest in boxing gloves. We were greeted by a smiling receptionist who helped us sign in and helped to get gloves and our bands wrapped. The owner of the establishment greeted us as well and assisted with any questions and really put any of my first time jitters at ease. His class is definitely a workout! Not only are you boxing but he incorporates boot camp workout routines as well and I could feel the burn. It was a great mixture of boxing and training and I really liked it. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking to get healthy, work out in a supportive and fun environment as well as push your health to the next level! P.s. there's a sweet Muhammad Ali mural when you walk in that's a great photo opp don't take my word for it head out there and check it out for yourself :)
Love this place. I was nervous about trying it out, but the instructors are amazing and the other people who attend the class are all really helpful. I've never felt judged here, regardless of how awkward and out of shape I may be. Thanks y'all.
You will lose weight here, remember to bring water , face towel and buy your own wrap and gloves. You really need to buy that, the ones at the place are not very clean.
I am doing the 6a bootcamp now and it's amazing! Miguel is an excellent trainer and the environment is very positive. The workouts are sure to kick your tail and leave you feeling strong, accomplished, and like a champ. I can't recommend it enough! I plan to sign up every month that I possibly can until I've reached my weight loss and fitness goals.
The location is ideal and safe...GREAT for all ages...The instructors are courteous, patient, and EXTREMELY knowledgeable about physical fitness as well as self-defense...The hands on experience is UNPARALLELED
This is the place to be! I've been to 5 different trainers and all are great at pushing, teaching, and supporting. They love doing the classes. Old school vibes here. I'm not a gym person, so I never go in the weight room, but they have one ???? for you. See you soon!
I've seen this establishment on Groupon so I used ClassPass to test it out to see if it was worth the investment.
We came for a 7PM class so there was plenty free street parking near the gym. Once you park you climb up a set of stairs and go to the left to check in.
Since it was our first time we didn't come prepared with handwraps or boxing gloves so we ended up renting. They sell handwraps and rent boxing gloves. I would recommend bringing your own because of sanitary reasons. For both it was $15 so I assume the handwraps were $10 and rentals $5. They don't have square so they have to enter your card manually and have you sign so be sure to come early to make sure you get this done before class.
Our instructor was Miguel and he was awesome. He was helpful in helping us get our hands wrapped for the first time and was attentive throughout the workout. It does get packed during class so while you warm up and run through techniques you are close and comfortable with one another. The class consisted of practice drills for technique, punching bags, sprawling with others in class, and ended with group ab workouts. The up beat workout music in the background definitely helped get us pumped and we left feeling like we had a great workout.
My only peeve with my first experience here was that nobody was at the front desk to check you in. There was a class going on but it took about 10 minutes for someone to notice us and check us in.
Love this boxing gym. its friendly no matter what level you are at you fill like a "champ" can't wait to start back at the beginning of the year
Nice instructors, everyone so nice and friendly. They put on good music so that you zone out and do even realize you working out.
AmaZing People. Miguel is incredibly knowledgeable and obviously a talented fighter. I am grateful for the time I got to spend there
Instructors and participants r friendly and encouraging. The workout is real...on my 2nd day and looking forward to doing it regularly
Super hard and you will definitely work up a sweat, but it's totally worth it. Great class!!!
This place changed my life !!!!!!! The owner it’s amazing, and you can’t decided what trainers is better! Highly recomended!
Just a great place, its a serious boxing gym with some serious boxers and ex-pro trainers but at the same time welcoming to all, very inclusive, nice people... Could do with a bar
I bought a 20 class groupon two months ago and have used it all up. I just joined as a member. The classes are really engaging and wow, what a fun and effective workout. I was pretty out of shape when I joined and its done wonders for my cardio, tone, strength, and energy level. I decided to change up my diet at the same time and I've lost a good amount of weight. The trainers are both tough and supportive at the same time. Its the first workout I've really looked forward to going to. There are lots of good time slots to remove the excuse of going and the classes offer enough variety that it doesn't get boring. The gym has a good community feel and people there are really friendly. Plus, its fun to hit things. Gloves are available to rent and wraps are available for sale or you can bring your own. Awesome.
I've been coming to this gym for almost 2 months now. I think this place is great! Love the instructors, the workouts are challenging, and it has a nice communal feel to it. The only reason it isn't a 5 star to me is because during circuit-like trainings, if the gym is crowded enough you can get stuck behind someone that really slows you down, whether it's on the stairs or doing footwork drills.
Excellent place for people of all different skill levels from experienced boxers to people who have never put on a pair of boxing gloves in their life. The coaches know how to work with you and challenge you without being intimidating or making boxing seem like something that's only for the pros. And to be clear, the coaches are professional experienced boxers so they know their stuff but they keep classes and gym accessible to everyone. I highly recommend the boot camp! Miguel is an awesome motivator/coach/trainer and it's a great way to reach your fitness goals quicker than you thought possible!
Love this place. I was nervous about trying it out because I imagined it to be some macho bro gym where everyone wore overpriced workout clothes, but it's NOT. The instructors are amazing and the other people who attend the class are all really helpful. I've never felt judged here, regardless of how awkward and out of shape I may be. Thanks y'all.
Love this place! The staff is encouraging and really want you to get the most out of your work out. The boot camps will get you in shape and are perfect if you have a nine to five. Not much more to say then this is a fantastic gym!
The boxing bootcamp with Miguel Lopez is by far the best workout I've ever had! Miguel is knowledgeable, precise, patient and very encouraging. You not only learn proper boxing technique but you also get an amazing cardio and fitness workout. I felt and saw results after one week. I have been fortunate enough to try out many of the reputable boxing gyms in SF and the East Bay and I can say It just doesn't get any better than Boxing for Health.
Found this place via ClassPass when I was in town visiting home for the week and looking to keep up/keep working on my new boxing and martial arts addiction and I'm so glad I did. I live in London and have been hopping around trying different gyms there to find the one I fully vibe with - picking your training gym is like starting a relationship lol - and none have been as great as this place. Instantly the vibe was chill, fun, friendly, and relaxed, but at the same time I think I may gotten the best technique instruction to date. Really good drills, instructors care and know how to teach, very hands on and so much fun! Plus a killer workout that you barely notice how much you're really putting out energy wise cause its so much fun. Suffice to say I wish this place was in London!!! Will 100% be back when I'm visiting home next. I never write reviews, I was just genuinely so stoked on all my experiences here thus far - definitely referring any of my friends who wanna get into combat based fitness etc to here.
Awesome staff! Intense workouts! Attentive to technique trainers! I took a class with Miguel! It was fun and challenging! Definitely stretched out of my comfort zone and had fun doing it! Other workout people in the group classes are awesome to chat and engage with! I love the not so early 10am and 11am workout scheduling too! A little dusty. But it's boxing!
After playing rugby for 10 years and gaining 30 lbs in graduate school, I was definitely looking for something that was intense and very active. I had tried several crossfit gyms as everyone kept talking about the Crossfit community and how great it was but I never felt welcomed and it wasn't for me. My friend recommended I get a groupon for 10 class at this gym and I have to say that I am extremely grateful to her for that suggestion.
My first class was taught by Omar McCullough who was not supposed to be the instructor for that day. He took us outside to do some cardio before hitting the bags followed by some ab work and I must say that the following day, I had discovered some new muscles and everything was sore. I loved it. Omar was the first friendly face I saw when I came in and he checked on my progress regularly as I worked my way toward completing my 10 classes. When my groupon was up, I bought a membership and then found out that Omar was himself a personal trainer. YUP! Sign me up for that.
I have been working with Omar now for over a year, my most consistent training ever outside of team sports. He progressively increases my workouts so much so that I went from no push ups to over 100 military style and variation push ups. I can now bench press 185 lbs and I have lost 20 lbs to date and still shrinking.
The day I really felt like I had found my place was when I walked in and Omar had made me a meal plan with all my palate constraints. I followed that meal plan diligently as part of a 30 day challenge and lost 10 lbs. Never had anyone else care enough to do that for me.
Omar was a great decision and investment in myself. Looking forward to sexy back '17 and meeting all my other goals. #teamDaP
I never liked exercising until I started taking boxing classes at Boxing for the health. Now I can't get enough, I go 4 days a week, 2 classes at a time and train with Omar. He pushes you, but in a good way. Omar has helped me get stronger and build stamina. Thanks Omar! You should definitely train with him, you won't regret it.
This place is awesome, and my home away from home. Very laid back which i really like, now that fighting tv shows are popular most boxing gyms are super fancy, over priced and pretentious, but not boxing for health. I'm so glad I found this place.
And to top it all off their intro offer is an insanely good deal!!
Do not be fooled by the slightly worn look of the gym--this place is a diamond in the rough. Everyone working here is warm and welcoming and the trainer/owner Miguel is a ball of light. I had the most fun workout in the Strength & Conditioning class than I can remember ever having in any workout class. It kicked my ass and I learned a lot about proper form (though I still have a long way to go!). It felt like a real community. I think they just made a regular out of me!
The best boxing gym in the East Bay hands down, opps I mean heads up. Miguel and his team, really enjoy teaching everyone from children, athletes, to the elderly. The have fun, and the gym is culture is very friendly and calm. My favorite place to train!
Absolutely enjoy coming here! Miguel is a PRO and enjoys teaching classes and getting you in shape. Despite the hard training it's always fun and its for any level. I also took private lessons and learned a lot in a relatively short amount. Fun Times!
I've always wanted to learn how to box but I've always been too broke and intimidated. I took advantage of the 20 class groupon deal they had and it was the best thing I've ever done. I actually look forward to working out now (weird). Miguel is my favorite, he's really friendly and helpful, especially to a newb like me who knows nothing. But all the trainers are great. They welcome those new to the sport and the other attendees are really encouraging too. Glad this is my new gym!
I am so glad that I found this gym! I was inspired to start boxing after seeing the movie "Creed" (funny but true) in December. I started with a Groupon (best Groupon I've ever purchased), did a month-long bootcamp, and now have a regular membership. It's a welcoming environment for people of all skill levels and boxing goals - whether you want a great workout or want to train to fight. I've been to other gyms that are really just cardio classes with punches and kicks but no real technique. At Boxing for Health, they teach proper technique. All of the trainers are experienced boxers, friendly, encouraging, and incredibly passionate. Even in the group classes, they pay attention to your individual skill and will train and push you accordingly. The classes are fun, motivating, and tough (physically and mentally)! You will be sore and you will be dying to come back for more. Even my pre-teen who would rather use his phone all day and night likes coming to the boxing classes. You get variety day to day, in the class offerings, and with the different trainers.
Fantastic gym and trainers... Miguel is the real deal... cool, caring, and hardcore. highly recommended!
I got a Groupon for 10 classes not knowing what to expect and intimidated as hell. My friends and I came to our first class on a Monday afternoon for the boxing class at 5pm with Miguel. He killed me on my first lesson. Legs, arms, abs, cardio running, and basic moves for feet and arms. We were impressed and enthusiastic to come back. I like that its not a set class schedule. You can come any day you like and you will learn something new every time ! We have had a few different instructors including Miguel, Bilal, OT and a few others whose names I did not catch. Each and every one of them surprised me with different exercises and techniques. For the most part throughout the class the instructors are engaged although the class size is at least 10. I love the energy they give off and its so fun ! Great workout, great deal. I will think about the membership, but no guarantees because, you know, budget.
Thank you, Boxing for Health employees and instructors, for giving me the best 10 workouts !
Boxing for Health is a great gym and community. I discovered boxing here over a year ago, almost two, and have been training here (particularly with Bilal, who is an EXCELLENT trainer) ever since. Everyone at Boxing for Health works hard but in a fun and spirited way. I appreciate that each trainer has real-world, professional boxing experience. They know their stuff. Would recommend for anyone who wants to learn how to box, or just wants a great workout!
I really love this boxing gym because I've learned new techniques and the trainers are really patient and kind to beginners. The workout is amazing and efficient. Additionally, the energy is really positive, because other gym goers are eager to pair up and motivate each other.
I've been to tons of different workout studios and classes around the Bay Area, but none of them have been able to create the same energy and sense of community that Boxing For Health has created here. The trainers are legit boxers who are not only approachable and encouraging, but also accommodating and respectful of each individual's level of experience, which makes the environment a comfortable one to work out in.
The classes are pretty interactive and most of the instructors like to switch up the structure, so you never get bored. All of them teach, challenge, and motivate you in their own ways. Depending on the class you take, the exercises vary from conditioning like squats, burpees, and footwork to boxing moves like punch combos, blocks and their technicalities. All this while hip hop music is blasting at a club level volume, so you can't even hear how loud you're panting and you forget how hard you're working, which is total plus for me.
A great gym with excellent instructors that have professional boxing experience and know how to tailor classes to all experience levels to create an engaging and fun workout. Highly recommended.
Miguel is a fantastic coach, and his obvious skill and fitness are an inspiration! I signed up for a one-month bootcamp, and was VERY pleased with the intensity (quite high) and time commitment required. The bootcamp was Monday through Friday, 7AM to 8AM, and though I normally don't leave the house by 7, I WANTED to make every class. Lastly, I discovered through Miguel's training that boxing is a ton of fun! I exercise 5 days a week, but I am constantly thinking about wanting to continue my training as soon as my schedule allows me to. Highly recommended!
Great workout and great experience. Tried it on a Groupon and transitioned to a full time member as it is definitely worth it. Very inviting and welcoming environment which I didn't expect from a boxing gym. The classes are varied and the instructors each have their own personality and style so there is a natural change between each class you go to.
I've taken personal classes with Miguel and it's great one-on-one training.
Overall the classes are some of the best work-outs I've had. High intensity with a balance between, cardio, strength and boxing. Be prepared to sweat.
Great gym. Great instructors. You get out of it what you put into it. If you want to put in werk, the instructors will push you.
I went to a few boxing gyms and this is by far my favorite. Miguel and Troy is the best!!! (Troy is not a morning person but he is a sweetheart haha) Be prepare to be sore for a few days after your first work out!! NO PAIN NO GAINS!! Have a good work out! :)
I have trained with Miguel Lopez for over 5 years and he is a terrific, motivating boxing coach and trainer.
This gym in general is great because there's no pressure to get in the ring, it's really focussed on fitness and health.
The experience here is welcoming and high energy, definitely no frills and all about the boxing.
Miguel is a pleasure to work with and and all-around positive and encouraging partner in your workout.
Best boxing gym in the Bay Area! Hands Down! Great Trainers, Great Environment, and Best Rates!
Loved the program. I will try and come back once I beat my cancer. Thanks guys!
Looking for an intense workout and community, come join BFH! I have been to several gyms in the area but none are as welcoming and body positive while being intense, as BFH. All the trainers are amazing athletes who know how to coach and motivate people at every fitness level.
I joined boxing for Health 5 months ago it's been a high endurance gym with skilled boxing, strength and conditioning classes, and personal training sessions. The trainers challenge you every class yet allow you to learn at your own pace. Recommended for anyone looking for a really good workout, and/or boxing training.
This is the most welcoming and body positive gym I have been to in East Bay. The trainers are competent coaches who know how to motivate folks at every fitness level. This is not one of your fancy gyms--i.e.,no towels or air conditioning here. Since I only care about learning the sport, getting fit and having fun while doing all of that, I love this place. Frills are just a way to charge more anyway. This is an affordable gym with great class offerings and excellent trainers. You will get a good workout that will leave you feeling great! Try any class and you will not be disappointed.
Classes are fun and hi intensity. Traing is available. Sometimes the classes are to full. Love coming here sometimes I slack and they will call you out but in all good fun! Great atmosphere no intimidation here. If you wanna sweat this is the place!
If you only read one thing: GO to Boxing for Health!!! It's a game changer.
I was so intimidated to come here, as I had no prior boxing/ fighting experience. It took a really great Groupon deal & coming with a buddy to get me to come here, but my gosh I'm so glad I did!
Tip: bring your own hand wraps, gloves, water bottle (there's a water fountain in one of the exercise rooms).
The location is extremely convenient! No excuses, it's right off the freeway exit/entrance.
The classes are amazing! No matter what skill level you are, you'll get a great workout in any of the classes. My favorite is cardio boxing because it's a lot of high intensity cardio with drills, bag work and a little technique built in. The regular boxing class is good too- more focused on technique, slower pace, less cardio drills. FYI: classes seem like they start 10ish min late, but it's really a time to warm up/ jump rope (they're hanging on a mirrored wall behind the punching bags). Also, it's a really great mix of girls and guys of all different skill levels, so you won't feel out of place.
The instructors are relentless, in a good way. They will push you to the max, and then some. Each has their own style, so if you're not thrilled with one, try a different class on a different day. I've taken classes with 6-7 different instructors here, and so far OT & Miguel are my favorite. They both have a passion for boxing, make class fun, and get you results quickly. They are also super friendly and approachable. OT teaches Tues/Thurs evenings (I wish he would teach a 7pm class), and Miguel on Mon/Wed evenings.
My only suggestion is a fan, or some sort of air conditioning. This place gets HOT and musky!
If you're still reading this, TRY IT! You won't regret it!
Boxing for Health is great! The instructors are great, though I mostly connected with Miguel and he was patient, encouraging, provides the push that I need. I have wanted to take boxing for a while but the prices are very high. Here they are reasonable. Great atmosphere. I would recommend to bring your own gloves and get the longer hand wraps.
I went several times last Fall but my current work schedule is making it difficult to return. I miss going.
I miss Boxing for Health! I went for a couple of months in the spring after getting the groupon 20 class pass. My new job has not allowed me to get down there to continue (so much traffic!), but hopefully I will be able to again in the future. I just watched Creed and it reminded me how much I missed it!
The instructors are awesome - I took Tuesday/Thursday classes with Miguel, and I got much fitter very quickly. I had taken boxing a bit before in college and I've done some "cardio boxing" at a normal fitness gym, but this class was sooo much more! I felt like a learned a ton, and my power and form improved quickly. The class is full of all sorts of people - as other reviewers have noted, no body or fitness shaming, which is really nice. Definitely seems like a microcosm of Oakland/bay area. Everyone there is really supportive and friendly. The music is great, too -- perfect for getting into the boxing mood.
I had a previous shoulder injury (rotator cuff tear/shoulder break) from a couple of years ago, and honestly, I did not feel like I had my full shoulder strength back until I worked out at this gym. :) I would recommend this gym to anyone who wants to get a great workout, have fun, and learn something while you're doing it!
My 15 year- old 6 foot son who has never found a sport he likes LOVES coming here. Miguel and Troy and Omar have been great and made him work harder than I have ever seen. He and his buddy have been doing this for a month and are totally into it. Now my son walks around the house throwing jabs and practicing foot work. Thanks Miguel!! Never thought I'd see the day.
I am only giving it 4 stars because it's not some super fancy place, but then we wouldn't be going to some super fancy place anyway. Really good people. Good work out and the boys are always working on something that's challenging.
I bought a 20 class deal from Groupon and now I'm a regular member! I started going to Miguel's class on Saturdays but he's very popular so it gets quite crowded. I switched to OT's class on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and that works out better for me. It's a great cardio conditioning class. He changes up the routine so you don't get bored and he helps us with technique so we can learn proper form. It does get hot in there in the afternoon because the building faces the west side so drink lots of water and don't forget a towel!
My only gripe is that the classes never seem to start on time. I think he waits for stragglers to come in after work (5pm class) but it kind of sucks for those of us that are there on time. I've gotten over it after a while, just know you have to go w/the flow but that's one thing I'd recommend on improving. Otherwise, you get a great workout and sweat a ton!
I bought the groupon twice and let both expire because I was nervous to go. Finally, I bought it a 3rd time and forced myself to go. I let the trainer know I was nervous and he paid special attention to make sure I was doing okay. I have had four different trainers, and they are all great and work you reeeaaallly hard! I love going to Miguel's class because he teaches the proper form and stance for each punch. I am terrible with my gross motor ability (it's hard for me to think about moving my arm and leg at once), and Miguel was very patient while correcting my stance. Love this place!!!
I have been going to this place for 4 months now and it's GREAT!!! I have seen changes with my body and also increased my self esteem. All the trainers are great and friendly they help with everything from motivating you to showing you the basic fundamentals of boxing. It feels like a family because everyone is so friendly and willing to help out. I have trained with Miguel and Troy and Bilal and they all great and have their own styles. I dare you to try them out and experience them for yourself
I bought the 10 class Groupon for Boxing for Health in June 2015. Even though all of the reviews were super positive I was pretty intimidated about going to a class on my own. I told my two friends about the Groupon, they bought it and we all started going together. IT HAS BEEN AMAZING!!! I LOVE boxing for health!!
I've been a member of the Oakland YMCA since I moved to Oakland four years ago and I'm also a runner and I'm a yoga teacher and practitioner. However, I wasn't feeling super challenged by running and I really haven't been going to the Y. I really needed something to shift my fitness into high gear. Boxing for Health was the right choice. I have only gone to Tuesday and Thursday night 6pm classes with OT. He's a great teacher and will work you out hard and you get a full body workout (including hitting the punching bag). What I love about boxing for health is that it's super body positive and there is no shaming in regards to people's fitness levels. As a black woman I also love being able to go to a gym that is black owned and where I see my self reflected in the other folks in the class. I also love the music...it helps me get into a zone and just be present for the class.
One recommendation: buy your own boxing gloves. Boxing for Health has a bunch for folks who don't bring their own but they get sweaty and it's kind of gross to put your hand in a glove with someone else's sweat.
Seriously, if you are trying to figure out if Boxing for Health is for you...just try it!!
Really enjoyed the boot camp. It definitely gets you sweating in the morning and the instructors are great.
NYE of 2013, one of my resolutions was to start reviewing businesses I frequented. A year and a half later, this is my first review. Better late than never! And, this is a great place for my first review.
After being out of the workout game for several months due to a torn hip flexor, I wisely picked up a Groupon for Boxing for Health. Like many other gyms, it smells of sweat, but who doesn't expect that?
I took the boxing class at 5:00 with Miguel, and had a great workout. Punches and moves are broken down, and it's almost like a dance. Miguel seemed very knowledgeable and did a great job walking the room to help all of us adjust our stances or give us advice. I didn't have boxing gloves, but not to worry, there are some there for everyone to use. I can already feel my muscles getting sore from today's class as I sit here and type this.
Great gym with unpretentious and friendly people, right by the lake. Who could ask for more?
Why did I take one star off? Because while I was going to the restroom, I accidentally went through the wrong door and a girl (I think it was one of the owners wife or relatives) standing next to a bed looked at me with a death stare, mugging, and frowning. I said "Hi, I'm looking for the restroom" she said "Downstairs" and rolled her eyes at me. Not sure why she was so rude but I definitely disliked seeing her or running into her from then on.
Miguel and Troy are nice so I'm not sure why they have a woman around so polar opposite of them. Maybe that's why she's kept in that room hidden away from everyone.
Anyway, the trainers are nice and even some of the other people that box there were nice. One guy I was partnered up with helped me with my boxing form. He was kind enough to apologize for his sweatiness...he was drenched in sweat but was so nice I didn't mind.
I stopped going after only a few classes because it's very muggy and super stuffy in there. It's not their fault, it's the location of the spot because the place faces the sun so it gets very hot and with everyone sweating it makes it stuffy and smelly.
Word of advice: Take your own gloves
great place to work out. friendly and supportive staff. the classes were fun and challenging- a beginner or someone with some experience (like me) can get a lot out of them. nori is an excellent instructor and a couple of private lessons with troy were terrific. in fact, all of the instructors were good. like most boxing gyms the place is a bit funky, but that's part of the charm.
Miguel was GREAT! He gave a lot of one on one attention! Learned a lot while receiving a good workout!! Thanks Miguel! I'll definitely be back!
I kind of stumbled across Boxing for Health last year by way of the oh-so-powerful Groupon and am now a regular member of Boxing for Health. Before I joined I knew nothing about boxing nor did I think I'd ever set foot into a boxing gym. Well, I'm glad I did because it is such an awesome place! It is a microcosm of Oakland with people from all walks of life coming together and having a good time while getting or staying in shape. I love catching up with the familiar faces I see on a regular basis and meeting new ones, too. It doesn't matter how much you know about boxing when you show up for your first class, how old or how fit you (not yet) are nor what you are wearing -- kind of amazing how non-judgmental it is. I like all the different instructors, they all have their unique teaching styles and whichever muscle I didn't work the day before with one instructor will get attention the next day with another. That said, be sure to check out different instructors to see who works best for you. My primary goal was to build upper body strength and learn how to box. Since I've been doing this for a couple of months now I've lost quite a few pounds and built more core strength - a blessing for the modern day office worker. Given that you're reading yelp reviews it probably means that you're curious to check this place out but are not quite sure yet what to expect. Just go, you will not regret it :)
I love this boxing gym. OT is my favorite trainer. He teaches 5pm and 6pm classes. (and maybe others- unsure) Good high impact workouts with good easy instructions from a knowledgeable staff. I bought the groupon for 20 classes. Well worth it! Go check out OT! In his famous words "if its burning, its working!" I also used to take personal lessons from him. He will work you to your full potential- trust me. He is the truth. No excuses, just work when it comes to him!
This place is the best gym I've ever been to. It's FUN! The workouts are hard, but you can do them at whatever level you want. I've lost 20lbs. But the reason I keep coming back is because of the people!!! Miguel is the owner, and he's really positive and upbeat - no matter how bad you are at boxing (and I'm pretty bad). Then there's Blau, Troy, Omar, and OT - they all are welcoming and will give you a good workout. Most of the clients who go there are women - and we are in varying degrees of fitness. Boot camp is great every morning and it's really changed my life going from blob to fit. And did I mention it's FUN?! I love beating the x$%# out of the punching bags! GO!!!!
Do yourself a favor for the New Year and start working out at Boxing for Health in Oakland!
You'll work with excellent instructors (Miguel and Shane), have fun, learn great technique and see your fitness level improve amazingly fast.
This is such a fun and comfortable gym to work out at-If you have done other work-outs at other gyms but didn't get the result you wanted-turn that around today by trying Boxing for Health.
Love, love, love this place! Not only did I noticeably lost weight (making very minimal changes to my regular routine) but I also just felt better. I went to 1 hr long class a week, cut bread and sweets out of my diet as much as possible and didn't do a lick of exercising at any other point than my one class a week - 3 weeks and I was down a pants size...
So here's my honest assessment:
Staff: When i started it was an odd first few weeks bcuz each Saturday I went there was a new face, which I have come to find is not the norm here. But I was fortunate enough to train with all four instructors & they were all so motivating & each one had their own style. & if I'm being 100% real they are ALL sexy...yes ALL of them..geez..that being said, they are super helpful too - they don't just help the "pretty" girls, they go around to everyone making sure that we are all given equal consideration! I've worked mostly with Miguel, the owner and he is (sexy, already covered that) but super professional, down to earth & funny! He motivates us by pushing us while lightening the energy with jokes & the best smile ever.
Place: Most days I walk in, it stinks and I love it! It's a REAL gym with sweaty people from all walks of life. We sweat from every crevice and we appreciate it bcuz if you have the strength to look around you'll see that your one of many in the same boat. No one here is going to care about what you look like or if you're in jeans (although not suggested) or boots or whatever, come as you are & sweat! Everyone's welcome.
The music I love - it's upbeat, songs I know, motivating but for the sake of honesty may make some people feel uncomfortable due to explicit content-we're all adults so not me personally but i get it for some that's not used to it.
The used boxing gloves are stinky and sweaty so I bought my own, problem solved. You'll want to get hand wraps too and it helps that Miguel has a video online showing how to properly wrap your hands, otherwise you have to ask either one of the staff of someone working out who looks like they know what they're doing.. either way people there are super friendly and will gladly help, if they can.
My #1 thing is that this is the most diverse group I've ever been in. I've had one timers with a number of gyms & hated them, mostly becuz I felt like I was the only one who needed to be there. Here there are so many body types, ages, races, and fitness / boxing levels that's it's refreshing!
Either way
Miguel is everything you would want in a teacher. Motivational, instructional, inspirational, positive and always in good cheer! He leads an action packed pace that's both a lot of hard work and a lot of fun. Regardless of the number of people attending each class; his attention is always directly personal and encouraging and he gets you fit for sure. Boxing boot camp has been a rewarding experience. Three weeks into the four week term I'm motivated and will be signing up for another four weeks. I'm really enjoying the physical changes I see in my fitness level and want to keep this going. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a complete workout at a great location with a fantastic coach.
Love this place
I have been Boxing here for 2 weeks and not only is my body firming up but my big stomach is going down. The staff is very helpful. Miguel and Troy compliment each other very well depending on your learning style.
I few days into your class. You may want to get some Dragon Balm and massage it into your muscle after just before bed to prevent body soreness.
Really nice and welcoming people work here. I came here yesterday for my first boxing class EVER and they made me feel totally welcome and inspired to push myself harder. Everyone was helpful and the place was clean. People of ages, genders and fitness levels were there with one goal in mind : to get fit and learn to fight
I love the workout and the people here!!! Great group of professionals and very encouraging.
This is my first week training there. I purchased my workouts thru groupon and I'm heavily considering becoming a regular member... I just gotta get past the sticker shock of the cost for the regular membership; $100 monthly for access to gym and classes.
Now be advised it is not a pretty place by any means. So if u need beautiful atmosphere u will be thoroughly disappointed, but if u looking for good sweaty fun and good folk stop I'm sure they'll be glad to see ya :-)
I purchased a 20 class punch card. I've been to just a few classes so far but I am so happy with the instructional quality, the intense workouts, and the size of the classes. I would highly recommend this studio to people at all levels of fitness who need a fun, fast paced workout in a safe environment.
Love it here! The guys are very professional and kind. Very motivational and encouraging !
I've been training at this gym for a few years now and it's awesome. Miguel is very polite & love his dedication to a healthy living . I've also done personal training with Miguel and Troy . The are both excellent trainers . Troy has a away of motivating you and making you work to your full capabilities! On Tuesday & Thursdays I attend OT's 6 class , the best class ever. He is very experienced , professional and you get true results . All the trainers are pro boxers and they are all great people . I love the energy of this gym & the location is great . If your interested in healthy living as a lifestyle and be around great people as you learn awesome boxing techniques go visit boxing for health located in Oakland !
I love this place! I have taking classes from both Troy and Miguel, both are great in different ways. I hope to do their boot camp soon too.
Great boxing GYM, it's small but personal. Miguel is great, and he really know his stuff. And overall it's a great deal. It's a great GYM if you have a 9-5 and want to get better at boxing and get in shape. A lot like third street, I think he used to teach there, and has extremely friendly staff.
Boxing For Fitness is a great gym, both for adults and for kids. I've been working out there since July, and it's been a great way to get in shape and lose weight! Miguel and Ava are both wonderful teachers, and it's fun to learn to box at the same time as you get fit! Their kids classes are also great, and my daughter has become a convert!!!
This is a wonderful gym. It's very small and new (summer 2010?), but seems to have ambitions to grow. There's a ring plus about a dozen heavy bags and some speed bags. There is room for about 6-8 people for classes.
These classes will get you in shape!
Miguel is an awesome trainer and teacher. He is very positive and encouraging, and he has an excellent teaching attitude -- starting with the basics, reinforcing, then building on it so that before you know it, you've learned quite a bit. Ava is very solid too.
Boxing for Health is a fantastic gym for both adults and children. All the trainers at the gym keep you motivated, encouraged, do not want you to quit, and keep you energized into meeting your goals. I would recommend to begin with any trainer, since they are all excellent at what they do. I personally like Miguel Lopez's work. He keeps the energy flowing and makes you go the extra mile with a positive attitude. Everyone here is health conscious. Boxing for health is not only for boxing, it is utilized as a normal gym too. Come here and enjoy the experience of getting into shape, being healthy, and meeting and working with great people.. :) THANKS EVERYONE AT BOXING FOR HEALTH!!!!!!
Awesome gym. The staff and trainers are all very knowledgeable! They offer very affordable 4 week boot camps every month, daily group boxing classes as well as personal training. The monthly dues and personal training cost are very reasonable and the best in the Bay Area.
Five stars don't lie.
A 120lb woman and a 300lb man (or even vice-versa) take a boxing class here, what do they have in common? Neither will feel out of place. Both will sweat like Whitney Houston circa 1980's, have a blast and leave feeling like a million bucks. Oh and I should mention the morning (or even two) after I guarantee muscles you haven't used/noticed in a long time will hurt oh so good.
Here are the things my fellow Yelpers want to know:
Parking:
Yes it's free if you park back in the (safe) little neighborhood. It's a less than 5 min walk to the gym from there. If you are lucky enough to get street parking, awesome for you. But don't waste time driving endlessly in circles looking for the magic street spot.
The Classes:
Classes are roughly 10 or less people, a good mix of men and women and various skill levels to boot. You jump rope etc to warm-up on your own before class then a cardio workout together as a class. Holy burpees, I love/hate you so much! The class consists of drills, combinations with a partner, bag work and finish to off with one-on-one drills with Miguel.
The Gym:
It's a small gym with a full size boxing ring, open floor space for classes, jump ropes for cardio/ warm-up, bring your own wraps or buy a pair there, a few pairs of boxing gloves to borrow, and about a dozen heavy bags.
The Instructor:
A word about Miguel (the instructor) he is always smiling, positive and motivational... yet it's obvious by his physical prowess he can whip serous a$$ (this makes sense seeing as though he's a PRO boxer). This is exactly what one wants in a boxing instructor! Oh and just FYI, in case you care, he's easy on the eyes if you know what I'm sayin'.
Bottom line - You're a$$ called and said it can't breathe in those jeans. It's probably time to start working off all those bar tabs and food truck goodness. This gym is a good place for that.
Great Gym! Very encouraging trainer, the classes are fun! Miguel makes the workout not as intimidating as it seems, he is patient and everybody gets to work at their own pace!. Great place to get in shape!
I have never felt so confident in myself, physically and mentally until after taking the boxing boot camp class! No day is ever the same! Miguel is very patient, enthusiastic and encouraging. He would constantly motivate you and push you. He genuinely cares about seeing you reach your goals. Will definitely be back to take more classes!
Ive done 2 personal training sessions with shane so far, and its the best workout i can get, i work at another gym and try and exercise as much as i can and still nothin makes me feel more accomplished and healthy after leaving boxing for health. Shane is a great trainer and works alot on cardio, and developing stamina. he also does a great job breaking down the fundamentals of boxing and helps me with my form. definetly will be recommending boxing for health to my friends.
Boxing for health, is a great way to get the New Year started right. I started training with Troy, and he teaches private and group training. He's really flexible with the times he teaches. He will work you out and you will definitely feel the results in the future. Being in the gym is a really fun, energetic, comfortable atmosphere. If you're ready to get in shape, feel good about yourself, Boxing for health is the place to be. Set a goal with Troy, let him know what you want to accomplish and he will get there. =)
ok , so this is my third time working out with personal trainer Troy King. I wanted to have a couple sessions before I gave my review. Firstly the gym is really clean and vibrant with lots of light which makes me want to work out. Secondly I am getting in shape and I love it! My muscles have been working! Troy has given me a couple of things to work on at home in between our meetings which as really helped me take it to the next level. I am going to post a pic next week! I am super excited about my new body. Troy is really great and works with me when So not only am I going to be able to kick major ass I am going to look gorgeous doing it! I love boxing for health! They have really made a difference in my life and my future!
I have been going to Boxing for Health for over a year now and I will say that I have never been in better shape. The instructors are all skilled and offer a great workout. I usually go to Miguel's classes (who is OUTSTANDING) but I went to a class taught by Troy recently and he kicked my my butt, I was sore for days afterwards. This is an awesome gym with great people, if you want to get in shape FAST and have fun in the process I highly recommend BFH
I highly recommend Troy king as a trainer. I was a member at boxing for health for a year and a Half. His knowledge and motivation transformed my physical and mental well being. After training with him I can honestly say I was in the best shape of my life. Unfortunately I had to relocate but he still provides me with a nutrition plan and daily workouts. I thank him for encouragement and time.
I have been working out here for almost two months and I feel awesome. I've gone to barbell-and-treadmill gyms for many years, but always found them to be tedious.
Boxing for Health has a strong sense of community. Everybody--trainers and members alike--is friendly and excited to be there. I do the cardio classes, usually 3 to 4 times a week, and I see a lot of the same people there every time. The social aspect of the gym is a big motivation to go on days when I'm feeling drained from work. The membership encompasses a huge range of ages, professions, and body types, and the trainers ensure that everybody is included.
The three trainers I've worked with (Miguel, Shane, and Troy) push all members to their physical and mental limits, but there's nothing competitive or thuggish about the vibe during those classes. Quite the contrary: Trainers and members work together on various drills, and everybody props each other up. Depending on who shows up--members or trainers--each class varies considerably from others. Some are intense, straightforward aerobic workouts; others focus more on bag work; still others focus on partner work (combos, blocking, etc.). The great thing about these classes is that you can get as much as you want out of them. No trainer will ever force you to do something you don't want to, but they will always encourage and help you to go beyond what the rest of the class is doing.
In short: I enthusiastically recommend BFH if you're bored by Golds and other traditional gyms, if you want more human interaction, and if you want to start sincerely caring about fitness and exercise. BFH has really changed my life over the past 8 weeks.
Ok...are you looking for some zen health club? A boxing class that is fitted with the latest technologies and equipment (like...I don't know...air conditioner)? Are you looking for instructors that will be sympathetic to your "slightly overweight/unfit" stamina? If so...THEN DO NOT GO HERE!
BUT....if you are looking for an awesome group of instructors in a no frills gym where you actually break a sweat and feel good about yourself when you finish then this is the place for you.
Being a "slightly overweight/unfit" girl myself I decided to jump on the chance to get a package of 10 boxing classes for cheap. My friend and I began going and each time I get there I want to turn away. It is HOT inside, not sparkling clean (but definitely not a health risk) and smells like boxing gloves and sweat and I LOVE IT! I can't talk about all the instructors but Sean is fab! He pushes you when you need it but is not mean. He will make sure you are hitting hard and that you are doing it correctly! He enforces technique and builds stamina but does it with a smile so you don't feel like a schmuck.
The classes are forever changing so you don't know what to expect when you come in. Is the warmup going to be a run uphill? A flat run? Some crazy Insanity drill? Jumprope? All of the above? None of the above? You just don't know so you are always kept on your toes...like any good boxer!
Being that I have done boxing before in this type of real gym setting I really enjoy it! I even drive to Oakland from SF weekly for my ritual 1hr of sweaty hell! Each time I enter I get motivated and each time the class ends I feel proud. This class mixed with a lot of life changes has helped me get down 25lbs (thus far) and 2 pant sizes. I feel good and motivated and you will too!!
Oh yeah and so far the people who take the classes are all super cool too so no stuffiness!! Its a perfect down to earth, real boxing facility!!! I couldn't recommend it more!!
My daughter has been going here for 2 years. She started in the kids class and moved up. This isn't what I would expect a boxing gym to be like. It's small (but with everything needed for a boxing gym), welcoming and the trainers are both positive and challenging. For anyone that would like to learn boxing but is a bit intimidated by the idea of a boxing gym - please call or drop in. I think you'll feel that you fit in. When I go and watch my daughter I see all shapes/sizes/ages/colors and physical abilities.
One word, MOTIVATION. If you're looking for a place where you can truly find your motivation to get in shape, boxing for health is your place. The instructors are truly knowledgeable in what they teach and go out of their way to demonstrate important boxing techniques that I find other places lack. They push you when you need to be pushed yet are positive, genuine and warm in the same regard. When I leave that place, I always feel so amazing. I highly recommend checking this place out. I'm so happy I found you guys! I'd give this place 10 stars if I could.
Miguel, Troy and Shane make you feel like you can take on the world. They push you beyond the limits you thought you had.
How can such an intense, grueling workout be so FUN??? I don't know...but Miguel and his crew make it happen!!! All the trainers have different styles of teaching. You may prefer one over the other. For me, I get bored easily so I appreciate mixing it up. I've been going here almost 3 months now and I'm already seeing results. I took several classes to start and then decided to commit to bootcamp. Now I'm doing a combination of classes and personal training with Troy to work on the trouble spots.....Troy promised me a tight ass, and he delivered :)
You're gonna hurt places you didn't know you could hurt...and you're gonna love it!
These trainers are gonna work muscles you didn't know existed.....and you're gonna love it!
You're gonna leave class with more confidence than you ever you knew you had....and you're gonna love it!
There is just something about punching the crap outta that bag!!! I don't know what it is... I can't imagine there is a better way to get in shape. My goal was to get in the best shape possible in the shortest amount of time. I've toned up and firmed up dramatically in just a few short months. You can tell that all these guys genuinely love getting people in shape and are always willing to help.
I LOVE THIS GYM. I have been going to the Thursday morning classes with Miguel and I can't get enough. I wish my schedule would allow me to go more often because I feel amazing after each class. I get pushed in a way that is challenging but fun, learn something new every time, and can see and feel the changes it is making to my body. Miguel is awesome, he makes you work hard with a smile on his face. If you make a mistake he just encourages you and helps you work out the kinks.
As a small trans dude I was worried about going to a boxing gym and feeling VERY out of place and was also concerened about my safety. I have never once felt out of place here or worried in the slightest. I felt right at home and I always enjoy my time there.
The beginning cardio boxing class is a great place to start for someone who has never boxed before and wants to learn the basics, sweat, and feel sore in the best way afterward. The space is small but offers everything you need to learn bag work etc. and miguel also trains you with catching mitts which is super fun and rewarding. The classes so far have been small with 2-6 people in them which is really cool since you get lots of 1 on 1 help if you need it. I would recommend getting your own gloves and hand wraps if you find that you enjoy boxing because the gym does have some but they are pretty beat up from use.
End point being this place rocks! It is affordable, fun, and will make you feel great. A million stars!
I am a middle aged mom of two young kids, and a year ago I decided that I wanted to learn how to box. Pretty unusual. I took a few cardio classes at a very popular SF boxing gym, decided that I wanted to spar- and stupidly, that is exactly what I did. After many bloody noses and a couple of black eyes, the trainers at Phoenix Fitness in Berkeley (whom I respect greatly) suggested that I train with Miguel at Boxing for Health. I've been working with him once a week for nine months now, and it is the smartest decision I've made since I've started boxing. Miguel is the most precise, technical trainer I've worked with- and I've worked with several from three different SF boxing gyms. He is incredibly patient, talented, and is a natural teacher- he has a gift for breaking down footwork, combinations, offense and defense in a way that I can actually practice and then use in my sparring. Most importantly, he takes me seriously! I am certainly not a pro, but he respects my effort and I've become much more confident when I work with big boys in the ring. No more black eyes! I live in SF, work out and spar at two different SF boxing gyms, but I am committed to driving to Oakland for my time at Boxing For Health. I love this place!!!
One of the best boxing gyms in the Bay!
Miguel, Troy and Shane are focused on getting you in shape. This gym is a true testament of "You get out of it, What you put into it" I came here when I was out of work and needed to let off some steam.
If you plan to go here just to be cute or think going to a boxing class is "a great conversation starter" then you won't get too far. If you want to work up a sweat, learn some techniques, be apart of a 'team' environment and have fun! Look no further.
Oh, you can get a great work out by signing up monthly and going to the classes, if you're not ready for the bootcamp.
To be balanced, my only concern - There's alot of rolling around on the floor, pools of sweat here and there, made me wonder how often does the floor get sanitized. I know, I know, that's not a very "gangsta" thing to be concerned about but safety first!
Comment - The other reviewer who's concerned about the music. I too on occasion have been annoyed by the music, not my particular style of hip hop and levels can get up there, but it does get you "amped" and it wasn't enough for me to stop going.
Your investments will be:
- Gym bag ($20-30)
- Face towels ($2-5)
- Hand wrap ($10)
- Boxing gloves
($30-40, don't be cute and get MMA gloves, your hands aren't ready yet)
- Water bottle/Water (They have a water cooler but when it runs out? you'll have to wait until next months refill)
Now that a brotha got some work! If my commute wasn't so hectic, I'd still be going here!
I did something today I never thought I would do. I ran. I ran, then ran stairs, then did burpees, squats, pushups, and ran back to the gym. THEN I DID IT AGAIN. VOLUNTARILY. Why is this amazing? BECAUSE I HATE RUNNING. However, I don't hate it when it's part of my workout here. Which is weird, because I really hate running.
The trainers here each have three unique styles, and all together, they have turned me into a (nearly) lean, mean, boxing machine. Miguel and his perpetual good mood and encouragement makes you want to go hard and push yourself. Troy taught me to just submit- do what he says, forget the pain, and just punch harder and faster if I get tired, I am not one to submit easily- that was an interesting thing for me to understand. And Shane, well, Shane has this "Slow burn" kind of intensity about him. He pushes you without you realizing he's doing it, until suddenly you are planking with the best of them.
Just go, give in, do what they say, enjoy your time with the Boxing for Health family, and watch it improve the rest of your life too. Not just physically, but mentally. As Troy says "Today is about mental toughness.." and it carries over into the rest of your life.
Go make a sweat angel on their floor. You'll be glad you did.
Many moons ago, I took the Hippocratic Oath to first, do no harm. I saw nothing in the Oath about bashing heaving bags, crushing focus mitts, and throwing haymakers at professional fighters trained to make you look foolish. Actually, with the limited time that I had, I was searching for the most efficient, highest intensity, "hurts so good" workout which didn't involve the pervasive ennui associated with a typical gym. Enter Miguel, Troy, OT, Omar, and Shane. Damn. Through them, each session adds another layer to the complexity of this fighting art. Once you think you've mastered a certain skill set, you learn that there is yet another technique you could tweak. My wife sometimes asks me why I don't undertake a more refined and less brutal sport. My response? Anybody can pick up a golf club or a tennis racket, but it takes a certain amount of testicular fortitude to expose one's soul and enter that ring. It's scary. A certain author once said" Courage is resistance to fear, the mastery of fear, not absence of fear." So I encourage you to check out BFH. You will feel like a champ just for going.
When you start taking classes or sign up for a bootcamp at Boxing for Health, you are making a lifestyle change, a mental, physical and emotional change. The gym is community oriented and you feel welcomed every time you step into the gym. As a woman I want to feel strong and healthy. I also want to defend myself if I need to. Boxing for me has been a lifestyle change. I am in the best shape of my life. I started with a four week bootcamp so I could commit myself. I did four more bootcamps after that and then decided to become a member for only $55/month with a year contract.
They also have kid and teen classes which I think is fantastic.
Boxing for Health promotes themselves at First Friday Art Murmur in Downtown Oakland as well. Boxing is an ART. Boxing is DEFENSE. Boxing is STRENGTH. Boxing is MEDITATION FOR THE SOUL.
Bootcamp has everyone- from those who are very out of shape to those in shape, those who are young and those who are over 60! Boxing for Health is about changing your life to be more healthy. ALL PEOPLE ARE WELCOME and the trainers always modify the exercises to fit your needs. The trainers are fantastic and supportive. I especially like Miguel Lopez and Troy King.
If you are ready to make a change in your life, come to Boxing for Health!
They also have a HUGE appreciation party every month.
COME ON IN AND MAKE BOXING FOR HEALTH PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY!
EMMA- OAKLAND
This is a fantastic gym.
The trainers are tough but not egotistical douche bags who yell at you for no reason.
The workouts go by quick because no workout is the same - very good for people who tend to get bored while working out.
If you are serious about getting into shape try this gym out, it is well worth the money. Note - you will not look cute after your workouts here so if you want to join a gym to show off your cute new Lu Lu Lemon workout wears this is not the gym for you.
This is such a great place to get a good workout. Mind you, these guys who are training us are either a) professional boxers or b) going to go professional soon. So there are no posers here.
If you're looking for the real deal, sweat and to lose some pounds, this is the gym for you. Yes, it's grimy, sweaty and sometimes even smelly due to EVERYONE sweating from a serious workout. But hey, that's how it is. No frills but effective as hell. I've dropped one size since going there 5 times.
If you're looking for a stylish place to bring your latest and cutest gym outfit and accessories, this is not the place for you coz no one cares. Really.
The trainers are serious but very motivating, passionate and friendly. They love what they do especially Miguel. You can't fake the funk when you're training a bunch of sweaty, pink-faced and smelly participants. Personally, I don't want to be on the receiving end of their punches (ever!) but they're all super nice and not intimidating.
WOOHOO! AS GOOD AS IT GETS!
I went for my first ever boxing related workout at Boxing For Health. I have known about it for a year or so, but wasn't motivated/committed/confident enough to walk in and get started. I made excuses: "The hours aren't compatible with mine" "I don't have wraps or gloves" "I might cry in front of everyone" "I have bad coordination" "I'm scared"
I love boxing. I grew up on kung fu, WWF, and Mike Tyson. Yes, I am a child of the 80s. I'm an adult and now I want to box.
After hearing nothing but great reviews and positive feedback from members of Boxing For Health, I finally decided NOW IS THE TIME.
The beginners boxing and cardio class is MON-SAT 10AM-11AM. You warm-up with jumping rope (haven't done that since I was a kid and it felt great!). All equipment is provided to you. Leg lifts, pushups, practicing your stance and jabs. It was all guided and at a reasonable pace. I never felt rushed or stressed, never felt uncomfortable or forced. Very cool, guys.
Yes, it's true, the wraps were funky and not washed. But they have an antibacterial hand sanitizer dispenser (and it's filled with the good stuff). Fortunately, I had my own gloves. THE ONLY COMPLAINT: there wasn't assistance in wrapping your hands properly. Anyone that is shy or doesn't like to ask for help may do an inadequate job and could hurt themselves. Good thing I'm fresh and know how to wrap.
You get to punch bags. Then you get to punch mitts with the instructor. He takes it slow then you get to go faster and higher and you punch harder and you feel LIKE A BEAST! Wow, what a bitchin' feeling to punch something and feel your muscles work. Absolutely amazing.
Boxing For Health, thank you. Thank you for being in Oakland. Thank you for taking health seriously. Thank you for posting motivational videos and comments on your Facebook page. Thank you for helping make a body feel good!
For zero frills but absolute fuck yeah GO, GO NOW TO BOXING FOR HEALTH!
I LOVE this gym! I've always wanted to get into boxing as a fitness regimen and hesitant because I never found the right amount of teaching, grit, convenience, and good people. This is the place if you want to get fit, not be judged, be around amazing people and receive instructions on how to really box! The trainers are awesome and really care about your health. I also love the positive vibe of this place and the people who work here. My only negative is that I have 2 kids and can't get in to work out as much as I would like....but that is not their fault :-)
TROY KING!!!!!
This brotha right here is the truth!! I have been working with him one on one for the past 3-4 months since my car accident and not only has he helped with my rehabilitation but I have lost 20lbs and in better physical shape then I have every been in my life. I still have a long way to go but I won't be where I am physical if it wasn't for him. He pushes me to my limit, always hardcore encouragement (cause I get lazy lol), educating me on proper nutrition and leaves me sore as hell!! Lol!! If you want a great and serious workout checkout Troy King at Boxing For Health..
I love love love this place. I have to confess in the beginning I was a little intimidated, but after having my first class I got addicted. The trainers here are no joke, they are tough and serious, but yet super nice. If you want to feel good with your body and your mind, this is the place to be!
Awesome boxing gym. OT and Miguel know how to work you out! Small class sizes focusing on boxing fundamentals and conditioning. Glad to find a awesome boxing gym in Oakland.
Took my first class here and really loved it. Its a small gym so you really get to work on form and technique.
